Limited range makes an otherwise good design frustrating. Jul 27, 2010 ONE BIG NEGATIVE:
I've worked extensively testing and trying to improve the maximum range from this product for over the last two years. With new batteries, properly charged, I never get more than 50 yards range. Within an hour of turning on the receiver, this distance decreases noticably, so after several hours the reliable range is closer to 20 yards. If I fail to charge it for 3 days, (approx 4 hours of use) the range falls to the length of a long lead (about 30'). After two sets of (expensive/70 dollar) batteries, I've concluded the unit is either poorly designed or under-powered.
PROS:
The range settings appear to be very well "stepped" in small increments - (I've tested on my own hand through 5)
The design is good, easy to turn on/off, easy to hold, watertight. doesn't snag on gear.
The probes work well, being comfortable but still reaching through thick fur (golden retriever)
The training materials are satisfactory and helpful if you haven't had a professional train you in how to use one of these correctly. (Used wrong I believe this device could really mess up your dog's behavior, and turn 'em into a neurotic, paranoid critter.)
SUMMARY:
If it wasn't for the Range issue (which seems prevalent among other users) I would give this product five stars. But because the range is so limited to start with, and then falls off rapidly with use and time, I cannot recommend this unit. I gave it two stars rather than one because if you want to train in your back yard or at leash-length it is very satisfactory - (but that is NOT what the marketing material promises.)
best money spent Jul 09, 2010 This did the job, JoJo is a differnt pup when I put this on him He listens to me and wife(she did not like the idea of getting this had to tell her she could shock me frist 1 was not bad for me or Jo but 2 I dropped it I use the tone more then anything unless Jo dosent listen and he knows after a shock he should not be doing what he is doing, like running to the hwy or after people great training collar
Gift for my mom and a stubborn dog. Jun 14, 2010 This collar is the best thing I EVER bought my mother. She has a 7 year old Labrador retriever, which I also bought her (at 10 weeks old). She is adorable and smart but bullheaded and difficult to train. (the dog...but, eh, my mom too!) She actually was kicked out of obedience school. My mom couldn't let her off the leash in the backyard because she would just run and not come back. Basic commands were fine and she clearly understands what she is supposed to do but just refused to do it. ANYWAY, it took a day and she was a different dog. Keep in mind this shouldn't be used as a cruelty and I hate to think that people would EVER use it irresponsibly, but if you are looking at a system like this one, then you are already considering it. This system works well. It is easy to use and set up (my mom had no trouble setting it up and using it by herself.) I obviously haven't used other brands but my sister has one as well for her dog and she bought it at Walmart I think. Same brand but not as good. And she spend more than this price.
If you don't believe me. My mom told me yesterday, "It was the best thing I ever bought for her!"
Petsafe Sportdog Field Trainer May 11, 2010 This is the second petsafe sportdog field trainer i have bought. I would highly recommend using this training tool to train dogs. However i have been disappointed with the quality of the products. My first one stopped working because the screws rusted and expanded causing cracks in the plastic and hence water filtered in when we took our dog to the beach. This happened even though we religously rinsed it after our dog swam with it at the beach as advised in the manual. We had no warranty because it was purchased overseas through amazon. Our second one is only a few weeks old and is faulty so we have had to send it away at a cost of $65 to be repaired. We have spent so much money on this product. I would recommend paying a bit more and purchasing it through a store in your country where you can be guaranteed a warranty. We might have had some bad luck but i think it is better to be safe than sorry and out of pocket!
The rechargeable battery is key Apr 23, 2010 I have a collar that runs on batteries. It works for a day at most. Spend the extra money to get the rechargeable version.
Also, I concur with the other commentators who said they never need to go past level 2 or 3. My dog is very stubborn, and head strong, (about 60 pounds). He's so concerned with the consequence of level 2 that the beep is all he needs. I rarely have to shock him, and generally only use the beep.
Be careful, though. Shock collars are for reinforcement, not for teaching new commands. Your dog should know a command already when using the collar (ie knows what sit means even if he/she doesn't listen to you).
