SD-400 is Broken Again Jul 24, 2010 I am now on my 4th replacement, and his time I can't get the collar and reciever to communicate if they are more than 5 feet apart. Each transmitter will work for a month if you are lucky, and then they seem to stop working at the most inopportune times. This leaves you without a collar for two weeks, while customer service gives you the runaround, and expects $40 to send a another replacement. Please don't waste your time with this collar, and spend an extra $50-$100 to get a higher quality brand.

Best training device I've ever used Jun 19, 2010 I was hesitant to use a shock collar on my dog, but after speaking with a friend who worked as a seeing-eye dog trainer for years - I gave it a shot. Thought to be honest - I tried it out on myself (arm) first, thinking that I wouldn't be comfortable giving my dog more of a shock than I could take. (also - if you get this, please watch the DVD that comes with it first, so you know how to use the device properly - it's a training tool, not an all the time type of thing)
I have pushed the "shock" button less than 10 times I think since getting the device and it is - by far - the most effective training tool I've ever used (tried treats, classes, choke collars, harnesses, gentle leaders, you name it). I can now hike or take my dog to parks without worrying that she's going to bolt or not come when called. It is amazing and well worth the money!
Sportdog 400 electronic collar Jun 19, 2010 Best purchase I ever made for my pet. It keeps him safe by teaching him to obey our commands and makes him a great walking companion. I should say that the collar was only half the equation however, several one on one sessions with a professional dog trainer teaching us how to use the collar was money well spent.
Like it. Does the job. Jan 21, 2010 Works just great. Wish the collar had a clip instead of a buckle for easy on and off. Great overall.

Range is Problem Jan 01, 2010 The Field Trainer 400 is well constructed and worked very well at first. After a few months of using and recharging the range diminished to a point it is not much use to me. I have a Brittany and I only use the "sound" feature which she quickly obeys my commands unless she is further out than about 100 feet. The range significatly diminishes after a few months from over 400 yards to about 100 feet.
